I only use the stated power rating as a rough comparison between generators. But to compare them apples-to-apples you need a power v.s. wind speed chart as you found for the older version of the Whisper. Thanks for pointing me to it!
For other common marine wind gens you can see their power v.s. wind speed (actually amps v.s. wind speed; let's hope they're using 12v amps!): http://www.fourwinds-ii.com/v2/?c=library&i=windGenComp Nobody puts out very much power at 10mph, though it looks like the Red Baron (and Fourwinds?) puts out a little less than 70 watts at 10mph wind speed. Hard to read the equivalent Whisper chart, but interpolating it looks like about 50 watts at 10mph. But by the time you get to 15mph it's putting out nearly 200 watts while the Red Baron/Fourwinds are putting out just a tad more than 120 watts. I would never expect to see 28mph winds with any regularity, but I would expect to see between 10 and 15 here in the Caribbean. Based on power generation between 10 and 15 I'm still looking favorably at the Whisper.
