I noticed a tremendous difference between NY and Florida, but I think a lot of that could be made up if the panels tilted. The solar panels put out a higher voltage when cooler. This might make an MPPT controller more worthwhile. I have an MPPT controller but find gains only in the 5-10% range. I would rather have had a plain controller with an automatic switch to divert excess power to the water heater. Quite a lot goes against you in the far north, short days, clouds and low sun angles, but solar has the advantage of being maintenance free and very durable. Probably a wind genny or 2 would make a good combination with solar with tilting mounts.
