Speaking of solar panels, some of you might be interested in a Malibu brand, solar powered LED light I found in Menard's landscape lighting section for about $40.00. It has its own solar panel that's about 6" X 8" at the end of a cord that's maybe, 10' long. The light itself has 8 or 10 LED bulbs in a floodlight housing. It puts out an amazing amount of light and, for us, it's perfect security light/anchor light for the cockpit. I set the solar panel on top of the bimini and aim the light so that it reflects off of something white and, presto, we have "free" security lighting while at anchor. Of course, it's light activated, so it's pretty maintenance free -- unlike everything else on the boat.
I have always wondered how effective our "real" anchor light is in keeping the other boats away. I think the Malibu gives us a lot more visibility at night. Yes, we will continue to use the anchor light in addition to the solar one. No, I don't own stock in Menard's or Malibu, but maybe I should. The lights are pretty cool. I even invested in a second one for the foredeck or maybe for the cabin where it can substitute for the courtesy lights and save an amp or two.
