Four of us did try that - catching a rope towed behind a sailboat and pulling
ourselves back to the sailboat to be retreived - while preparing for a voyage
to Hawaii. None of us was able to make it back to the sailboat at speeds over
3 knots. Your body naturally submarines at higher speeds and it is very
difficult to overcome that. Trying this at 4 or 5 knots, we each dropped the
rope after being dragged under the surface, and waited for our friends to come
back and rescue us. At up to 3 knots, most of us could haul ourselves overhand
back to the transom of the sailboat. Despite this demonstration of futility,
we dragged the rope all of the way from Seattle to Hawaii at the insistence of
the owner, one of the four who could not make it back to the transom at 5
knots. We sailed about close to 5 kt. all the way to Hawaii, but using
lifejackets and harnesses, no one fell overboard!

I believe that even if you make it to the trailing rope it will be impossible
for you to get to the boat, much less regain the deck at six knots. Try it
some time in ideal conditions.
