REPLY
Jim, my reply was directed to the question of "why not run a laptop
directly from ships 12V power"?
Evidently the person had declined to consider the dedicated power
bricks which all laptop manufacturers do offer or else there was
some other reason that was not stated. For example peripheral
equipment like printers, fax, copiers, and scanners etc. can also use
a lot of power. I picked 500 watts simply because it is one size I
know is being made by more than one manufacturer. In addition, 500
watts is about what you would need to run a satellite TV plus DVD /CD
player and home entertainment system.

More and more liveaboards now have boats equipped like a floating condo
and you find fewer and fewer minimalist who eschew the trappings of
urban livigng. The fact is you can now find pure sinewave inverters
in quite small wattages. Several less than 500Wats.
I just did not want to be accused of being partisan to one specific brand.

It is also a fact that not all computer manufacturers do make the effort
to ensure their power bricks do not emit any RF interference.
Because the Europeans have stricter regulations on the books, North
America is often the dumping grounds for substandard equipment they
cannot sell over in Europe.

The nature of the question would certainly indicate a lack of
technical sophistication such as you have,. In a technically perfect
boat, none of my equipment would run at less than 90% efficiency and
none o fit would radiate RFI and none of it would run hot.
And if that was a technical possibility I can promise you it would be
the only 30 foot boat in the world that cost a million dollars.

Anyone with your technical know how and ability can certainly device
much better solutions. but for th eaverage person who has to rely on
of the shelf solutions, the choices are more limited.
cheers
Arild
