Well for my money I'd head out of the habor and take a right to Muscle Ridge
anchoring at High, Dix and Birch Is. It would be a 2 hr trip so you can get
a little water time without beating youself up have a leisurely dinner and
get some rest. The kids can go in to the beach then depending on tide you
can check out the granite works on High. Land at the beach area across from
Birch and walk clockwise around to the north side. Dix is a nice liesurely
walk. Next morning go through Fishermans Passage and have a nice 3-4 hr sail
to Pulpit Harbor. Land at dingy dock and walk across the bridge and about
1/2 mile up there is a store with ice cream for the kids. Here you need to
think about what the kids will be happy with. You could head to Camden and
do the tourist trap thing. Belfast is fun but it puts you at the top of the
bay.
If you do Camden then back across the bay through the Fox Island
Thoroughfare to Merchant, McGlatheray or Burnt. Next day Isle A Haut.
Of course if you are looking for longer days then the Northeast
Harbor, Somes Sound, Frenchboro, etc is doable. The prevailing wind is SW
10-15 so depending on weather you could fiddle with your route also expect
fog this time of year. Another thing to do is figure which cove the
windjammers are heading to for the night and you will have great photo ops
if that is your thing.

We'd like the "both" option. We'll need to get the kids off the boat to run
around. Shorter hops are best when cruising with the kids.

I sail out of Rockland so I may be able to give you some recommendations. A
lot depends on how often you want to get off the boat for dinner/shoping or
weather you want a wilderness island hoping trip or both.
