I can't take credit for it as I learned it from an ancient edition of Chapman's which I read in my high school years. It was originally depicted as the correct method for the USCG to take a vessel in tow in rough seas. Few boats have deck hardware that can handle such loads. The old Chapman's contained more practical boat handling information to include how to break an inlet - now missing from my brand new edition.
