Norm, it will work with steel wires (rods) and metal coat hangers and maybe copper wires and it will find iron pipe, copper pipe, or even PVC pipe. It doesn't have to have water in it. I imagine it will pick up electric wires, but I've never tried that. I perceive it has something to do with disrupting the earths magnetic field and aligns the rods with the magnetic field, but I don't have a clue. **************Need a job?
