I don't have a clue either, but it works using wooden sticks, as in the
old-fashioned "water witch" style dowsing. And in my case the ones I observed
worked on un-energized abandoned wires buried with PVC sewer pipe.
It does work on open wires in air as reported by one of the list members today.
Since there are only four known types of energy in the universe, weak and
strong internuclear, gravity and electromagnetic I would put my money on
electromagnetic.

Norm, it will work with steel wires (rods) and metal coat hangers and maybe
copper wires and it will find iron pipe, copper pipe, or even PVC pipe. It
doesn't have to have water in it. I imagine it will pick up electric wires, but
I've never tried that. I perceive it has something to do with disrupting the
earths magnetic field and aligns the rods with the magnetic field, but I don't
have a clue.
