A long rifle of any kind should be used at long range. Are you sure of their intentions at ~500 yards? Since your intention is to kill them, you should be sure. The larger the caliber, the more likely that you can fire a disabling round into their engine - which the USCG often tries to do - after an initial warning round. We cannot afford a warning round. We prefer sitting ducks.
The USN parachuted SEAL Team SIX (DEV Group) personnel in to kill those pirates because they fire thousands of practice rounds a month. This was a zero error mission. They did not leave it to the already embarked SEALs who do not get to practice as much but who would excel at the task we might face. So when you have to send the very best, send the guys who practice the most. Shotguns are often acceptable where other firearms arouse suspicion or are contrary to law. Many nations bar the importation of any weapon firing what they consider a "standard military round." For example: 7.62 NATO, 5.56mm, or 50 cal/12.7mm.Many nations bar the importation of optical sights as they are afraid that you will assassinate their fearless leader. This topic would be allot simpler if there were no pirates as it would otherwise be an intellectual exercise.
