Hi Philip,
Your question was "Am I going to create any problems by connecting the AC power
ground to the 12V negative?"
There will be no problems underway, however you will become susceptible to
galvanic corrosion if you are connecting the shore power ground to the negative
terminal of your battery. (Assuming the negative terminal of your battery is
connected to your engine block thus becomes the boat ground)
Do not believe anybody who may be telling you there is a safety issue with
connecting ground wires together. The safety issue exists if the shore and boat
grounds are not tied together and it is mitigated by using a galvanic isolator.
Here is a suggestion to get rid of the hum without messing with the shore power
ground :
Connect the chassis of your computer or laptop to the chassis of your sound
system that is powered by the 12V boat battery.
Shorter and heavier the chassis bonding connection less the hum will become.
Adding inductance to the laptop power supply DC output wires will also reduce
the hum. (I think this was the filter Norm recommended)
Good luck,
Ahmet
