What we do is run a line from the boat to the helm area, and long enough to go back to the cleat, ,pull along side the line in the h2o, hook the line with your boat hook, (hopefully it has a loop on the end) run your boat line thru the hook and tie tie it to the bow. This is all assuming you have . 1. a mooring line, floating with a loop on the end, and 2. you approach down wind and current.
