Oh, wow. I've still got my first flying mentor's E6-B that he gave me
when I started flying; the center pin has pulled through the cardboard,
and the whole thing is pretty worn and rickety, but there's a whole lot
of history and good memories in that thing. Blackjack started flying
when he was 14 (no such thing as licenses back then; he'd made some kind
of a wily three-cornered deal for lessons with the guy who owned the
plane), flew in the Korean War, then went civvie and worked for the
airlines until he retired from Northwest. He also did aerobatic
competitions, and was still flying his Harmon Rocket when I first met
him - 73 years old at the time, still passing his physicals, and surfing
with his world champion surfer girlfriend (quite a bit younger than
him.) Damn, but I miss that old man.
