I do look forward to visiting the U-505 but will have strong mixed feelings about it.
While the submarine is a marvelous machine, it was built to kill my kind, and in Germany's case, to enslave the world. As a 27 year veteran of the Merchant Marine the ships I sailed on were the sub's primary target. While some German submariners did give aid to merchant mariners in lifeboats, there were also captains that deliberately rammed those lifeboats. For the record, there were also American sailors who machine gunned Japanese survivors in the water. I heard both from the mouths of the perpetrators on TV.
