Does adding a connection point really help the situation though? Maybe what I should do is try to hack my 50 to 30 adapter and put the range plug there! Then I am not adding any extra connection points.

I'd suggest making up a short pigtail to convert from the 30A plug (which you might want to lash in place, at the pedestal) to the range plug.
