We have written directions in the head for the use of, in addition to
explaining at the beginning of the trip. I don't think that kind of thing
needs to be conveyed in advance however. There are also written directions for
the use of the stove, and (as required) waste/garbage plan.

We don't have it in writing, but we do require ALL guests to wear life jackets
unless they are below. Bob tells them, and people don't usually argue with
him. We have four adult SOSpender type jackets and we wear two of them. We
also have children's life jackets for various sizes. Parents can bring their
own children's life jackets if they wish. We also have throwable cushions and
a large container with extra life jackets in the cockpit whenever we go out.
And I mean whenever - even just the two of us with no guests. Bob and I also
practiced retrieving each other (although we were at anchor at the time) just
to see if we could do it. You might be surprised if you try it. I think we
need to do it again sometime soon. If you have a Life Sling I think you need
to practice with it too although we haven't. When we first started out, we
also did MOB drills with a cushion or something like that.

As for luggage - we haven't had any land lubbers as guests who would bring hard
side luggage.

When we give someone an invitation, it comes from Bob and he specifies what it
is for. A daysail for lunch is the most usual thing, and he says that we will
supply the lunch and asks about food preferences. If someone wants a specific
item which we don't normally have, we will either get it or tell them to bring
their own (depending on what it is).

When one has guests on land, there are still house rules. In some places one
takes off one's shoes at the door for instance. While a host tries to cater to
the guests needs to give them a good time, one doesn't allow guests to overflow
the bathtub or break the crystal on purpose, and I usually warn guests about
any hazards of the property that they might need to be aware of (poison ivy in
the woods, a low door for tall people, house pets that someone might be
allergic to etc). That is thoughtful - not rude.
