We just bought a Manta 40 and we've got a Raymarine C80 chartplotter. A few weeks ago we ran off the edge of the earth - er, chart card - and when I tried to load the next card apparently the entire pin connector thingy pushed down into unit. These are old CF cards with the gazillion pins. There are no bent pins, it's just that the entire pin connector got pushed back into the unit far enough that when the new card goes in there's not enough of the pins sticking out to make contact. I know all of this because we just paid someone to do a little bench time on it, thinking the problem is the card reader only to learn it's this weird mechanical problem. The guy reattached our chart card from inside, but he says the next time we change cards it's likely to happen again. I hope I'm explaining this well.
Anyway, we were hoping this thing would keep working for a while because we don't want to replace it (and the radar that goes with it) especially since the boat came with chart cards for the entire world and everyone has moved on to SD cards so if we upgrade we have to buy all new charts. Two questions: 1. How hard is it to open this thing up and attach a new card myself if this happens again when we get to New England and have to change cards? 2. If we do end up having to replace the unit (and the radar) what do people recommend? We have B&G sailing instruments and B&G autopilot, all of which we'd like to not have to replace. We are so used to using an ipad that we would love a touch screen but we don't a need super-duper top-of-the-line chartplotter, although the skipper would like something his old eyes could see a little better. 3. We plan on world cruising, not just US coastal and Caribbean so that's a consideration. Looking for opinions on self-serviceability of the C80 and on optional replacements. Thanks everyone. Marce s/v Escape Velocity now lying Oriental, NC, waiting for our C80 to come back and hoping to get to Maine some time before the end of the century.
