Found the offender: /var/log/lastlog (19 MB in size). Unfortunately, it gets
re-created every time I rebuild the livecd image. Why?

As a temporary workaround, I now explicitly truncate it to zero size in the
"prepiso" target. Any better solution is welcome.

This alone allows the CD to boot successfully with only 24 MB of RAM.

The next biggest waste (~2 MB) is legacy BSD PTYs and the corresponding udev
database entries. Is it OK to configure legacy BSD PTYs out of the kernel?
