Hi guys,
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you about the problem. I
started a new job and had lots of other things to do.
Anyways, Alexander, I ran the 6.1.1-3 LiveCD with /sbin/hotplug sedded
out. It booted on the 233Mhz Pentium. I tried a few times, and tried
6.1.1-4-sbinhotplugblank as well and it also worked.
Thanks. Let's slow down. Please confirm or deny each of the points below.
1) You have a computer where the original 6.1.1-3 didn't work.
2) On the same computer, 6.1.1-3sbinhotplugblank works.
3) The only difference is in the kernel, i.e., the init and the
.root.sqfs file are exactly the same.
If all three points are true, this proves with 100% fidelity that the
bug is not in the init, and is caused by early /sbin/hotplug processes.
Unionfs bug, in other words. Let's act accordingly and admit that my
idea with unionfs was wrong. Possible solutions:
1) Revert to the old-style read-only CD. Starting with 6.2-pre3, i18n
(font) problems are no longer of any concern.
2) Switch to the DM CD.
It is not realistic to hope that there exists a bug-free unionfs release
or that we can fix the bug ourselves.
