Thanks. Let's slow down. Please confirm or deny each of the points below.

1) You have a computer where the original 6.1.1-3 didn't work.

Correct

2) On the same computer, 6.1.1-3sbinhotplugblank works.

Correct

3) The only difference is in the kernel, i.e., the init and the .root.sqfs file are exactly the same.

Correct

If all three points are true, this proves with 100% fidelity that the bug is not in the init, and is caused by early /sbin/hotplug processes.

Makes sense.

Unionfs bug, in other words. Let's act accordingly and admit that my idea with unionfs was wrong. Possible solutions:

1) Revert to the old-style read-only CD. Starting with 6.2-pre3, i18n (font) problems are no longer of any concern.
2) Switch to the DM CD.

But why would all the 6.2 pre CD's (which use the same exact unionfs setup) work fine on all these i586 and older systems? Is the combination of that unionfs and the old 2.6.11.12 kernel the problem? I just don't see how we can lay the blame only on unionfs. Just my opinion of course.
