Try reburning. Using CD-R media instead of CD-RW sometimes helps.
Bad cable also produces similar errors in dmesg, but you can
differentiate between these cases: the CD-ROM drive makes specific
"re-reading" noise and slows itself down to 1x speed with bad media,
and doesn't do so with bad cable.
Re-burned and -62-pre4 CD is running like a top!
Good thing too, I only have 2 GB to build on. 1.5 for livecd files was
not a good option....

Re-reading was my case, and slowing down? By the time I was opening
xfce I could barely hear it turning! But it kept trying till it got
it. Interesting to see.
Zooming right through the boot now. I see that my startup scripts from
-62-pre3 match up nicely.
CD seems great so far. Now I need to make some time and get to building!
