I addressed that my last post... but to restate... the checksum isn't for you 
to check the written media with... but for verifying that your download was 
good.

dd is going to be destructive... but the alternatives offer non-destructive 
ways I think.  I could be wrong on that.  dd also only outputs what it was 
given whereas the other two offer additional features like being able to create 
persistent storage, a separate home partition, and even an encrypted home 
partition (all on the USB media).  That is for running a live system from and 
having persistent storage across boots.
