Maybe the major releases could have a 'code name'
say version 14.0.0 could be "Blaster Boombox" or whatever
and version 15.0.0 could be "Clever Cacophony"
all the 14.X.X would simply retain the 'code name' until version 15.
This might make it simpler for users to identify what base version they are using.
use case:
user: I am using Blaster, and I keep getting this odd visual artifact when I click the tripleOSC plugins volume.
dev: yeah, we fixed that in Clever... please upgrade
use case:
user: I am using Clever, but I seem to have an issue with my FX mixer crashing
dev: Do you know around what month you downloaded it?
user: I think it was in August
dev: Ok, this problem was already found and fixed if you install the current version 15.3.7 you wont have that issue, there are also some new features you will probably like.

so the dev would already know what code base the user is using, and the user wouldn't have to remember the 14.3.22 or 15.2.17 whatever The users as Chrissy was saying might be able to build up excitement over new releases.

IMHO this would make people overestimate the meaning of individual releases (and also increases effort for each release a bit) because if we're going to followthe "release early, release often" principle in the future we will be through very quickly. Release names are fine for distributions/operating systems with releases once a year. Just my 5 cents.
