I like the idea otherwise, except that I despise the bloated version
numbers of eg. Firefox and Chrome. It just seems to me like they
purposely bloat their version numbers to make them seem more "advanced".

I propose instead starting the year count from 1. So the next release
would be 1.0.0, the releases in 2015 would be 2.x.y and so on.
