VLC and GIMP, yes, not to mention Blender, and my own favorite when it comes to these kinds of things... Inkscape. Inkscape is by no means very modern looking - in many ways it looks like it's stuck in the 90s, GUI-wise, and this isn't just with icons and graphics - the overall GUI design is pretty weak. However... I've recently had to get intimate with Adobe Illustrator (due to school work) and I can say that in many ways, Inkscape is functionally superior. It lacks some of the features that would be useful for print media, but the basic ease of editing, the drawing tools etc. are lightyears ahead in Inkscape. What the hell, Adobe... what are we paying you for? The cool GUI?
