Yes that works well for basic layers, etc, however PhotoShop has layer
attributes that don't exist in Gimp such as Stroke, Dropshadow, etc. Just
because we have an XCF doesn't mean it's necessarily that much better than
a PNG. :) From the looks of the theme work already happening, I predict
these will have serious compatibly problems making it to Gimp format.
Vesa's points about Inkscape are spot on though. It's a terrific vector
application and despite it's dated interface, for widget-type graphics that
don't need to be printed, I prefer it hands down over illustrator.
