Didn't or doesn't? Before when you had a bad sources.list file it wouldn't
have worked. Now it should. Perhaps you should troubleshoot why that
isn't working as you will get into dependency hell if you want to install
each package manually (although you'll learn quite a bit).
If you want to do it manually, here is the list of packages that come
bundled with build-essential:
