Hi guys,

Looking at lots of messages about lv2+gtk gui crashes I also installed latest ubuntu and can confirm that muse 3 crashes while opening calf guis.

But it seems, that it's not related only to muse 3. Actual crash is not in calf library and not in muse's executables, but in library called libQt5XcbQpa.so, function QXcbWindow::setParent(...).

This is a known bug of Qt 5.5.1.

Here is the link (one of them): https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356583

Or you can just type 'libqt5xcbqpa setParent segfault' in google :).

Latest ubuntu uses this broken qt 5 version, so this will be a permanent bug, until qt5 is not updated. By the way - this bug is fixed already in latest qt5 versions.

Muse 2.2.1 is on qt4, so it just works.

P.S. QTractor in ubuntu 16.04 is also built against Qt 4, so tests of muse3 vs qtractor have nothing to do.

Hi again,

So this is what I got so far. I think the problem is something with 3.0.

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 and Kubuntu 15.10 and added kxstudio repositories on both (since the default packages on Ubuntu, even for 16.04, is MusE 2.1.2 which does not support LV2) To my surprise the kxstudio installation of MusE 2.2.1 can use CALF plugins just fine. For the most part... there was a problem with a blank gui showing up sometimes but just closing and opening the gui would fix it, might be because I ran it all in a virtual machine.

So, I went back to my Kubuntu installation and reinstalled kxstudio and everythging works there too, for the bundled muse binary 2.2.1.

However, when I try my build from git it crashes.
I also tried building 2.2.1 from source and it still works so it sure looks like something has changed in the LV2 support that now causes a crash. There must be some commit we can trace.

Regards,
Robert

    Oh err... stop presses..

Seems I had failed at installing kxstudio correctly though I
thought I made sure it was right.
Now the guis work for me (!)

Just wanted to mention it, I'll clarify my investigations and
reply to Jens later when I have more time to write.

    /Robert

Robert are they in fact not working for you as well?
(You didn't directly answer my question before.)

Oh, sorry, I wasn't very clear on that..
They are most definitely not working

I posted in LAU and got one response saying they were fine
on latest SusE with Qt 5.5.1

Yeah I saw Ruis reply. Seems to be a *buntu problem. Or
atleast Kubuntu. This would affect a lot of people so it's a
bit strange that it hasn't been all over the linuxmusician forum.
I'll try to setup some virtual installations and check other
        *buntu versions.

I'm trying to determine if it's my graphics card and PC.

Ah, I see, your graphics card issues, I would say its
definitely not your system, it's unfortunately bigger than that.

They work fine under 14.04.... here that is.

Yeah and I've been using them successfully under 15.10 also
(not 100% sure but fairly sure)

Strange thing is that some aren't working for Jens under 14.04

Right, for now we'll have to assume this is some other reason,
it did not cause a crash if I understood correctly.
Reminds me, Jens, if you are reading this. Please try and
enable the setting for selecting which gui to show for LV2,
Calf has several guis implemented, maybe one of them work on
        your system?

            ---
Been quiet here, as I have been working the last several days
trying to come up with just one single text comparison
            algorithm -
to fix a nagging long-time problem with our Jack midi
            devices so that
they can be paired together 'read/write' like the ALSA
            devices.

Then to fix up the device listings as requested by Dan (I
            think).

Also inching closer to the highly coveted automatic
            latency correction.

        Wow, cool!

I should (fingers crossed) have more time and energy for MusE
this coming month so I can help get 3.0 out the door. It
doesn't seem the calf issue is ours but it's a big problem,
otherwise I was gonna have a look at the transport icons,
something needs to be done. (...and all the other issues I've
        forgotten about)

        Regards,
        Robert
