Hello all,

in my recent attempt to arrange a song, I found myself in the situation where I
wanted to try different arrangements.
Different arrangements share some tracks, but other tracks are completely
different. When I want to switch from one
arrangement to another, I can mute the tracks of one arrangement and unmute the
tracks of the other arrangement. It
would be beneficial if I could save and restore mute configurations and restore
them with one click, however I couldn't
find a way to do it. Am I missing something? Do you think this idea is worth
persuing?
Interesting. First impressions, overkill to add a 'multiple arrangement'
system and UI /just/ for muting, I would tend to gravitate toward coding support /if/ it were useful for other things like switching among volumes, pans, controllers etc.
I bet that would help you too?

With audio tracks, I use Group tracks to manage multiple 'takes'.
But probably not quite what's needed here, and we don't have midi Group tracks.
As a related question, what is the difference between muting a track and
turning it off?

When a track is off, minimal processing occurs, just some housekeeping to update
 controls and stuff.

When a track is on but muted, there is no difference between being muted and unmuted - except that there is no actual sound - full processing still occurs. This means plugins are run,
controllers are processed, waves are pre-fetched, mixing is done etc.

Thus, 'off' can save a lot of processing time, especially for audio tracks using plugins.

'Mute' is specifically designed for rapid 'always ready' response when clicked, even repeatedly, whereas 'Off' is not. That is why mute must always be processing,
to always be ready for action.
A classic example of this is with reverb plugins - their reverberated 'tail' end sounds must be allowed to die away normally even if the user is clicking mute repeatedly.

Tim.
