Hi Jono,
I have a similar idea some time ago and for time reasons it never saw the light.

I have experience working with the google maps API, I own a site wich
uses it a lot and I'm used to work with the api (the site is
www.peligroalvolante.com. I'm sorry it's in spanish)

And I have some nice ideas apart than using it just as a heat map:

It would be great to mark in a map:
- Loco meetings
- Release parties
- shops selling hardware with ubuntu preinstalled
- places where you can get support
- your vacation pictures with ubuntu (yeah, I take ubuntu CDs to my
vacations and take some pictures with the mountains or the sea...) we
can even make contest about that.
- whatever which is Ubuntu related.

It would be more like a Ubuntu geographical show-off than just a cold heatmap.

I can offer myself to write a spec, discuss it and implement it, and
of course I can work with whoever is willing to help in the idea

Regards,
Lipe
