Hi Scott, comments in-line (I'm no committer, so treat with grain of salt,
or less).

I agree that it takes up some screen real estate that would be more useful
for the log viewer, I had some ideas that both the filtering, and the detail
panels could be snap-hidden via hot-keys, but perhaps it's even easier your
way by having a dialog/popup for the filtering input. I think the detail
view should still be contained within the main panel, just hidden by
default, and easily made viewable when needed, but that's just my opinion.

[re: your other cool features]

Sounds like you have been ploughing ahead with some cool stuff. Could you
send me a screen shot of the features, and maybe even a Jar for me to run
and take a peek at it? I'm just curious, sounds so cool.

Perhaps the log4j community needs to formalise some sort of "feature
requirements" for Chainsaw through discussion, and prioritise those on a
release schedule basis. Once the requirements are ok-ed by the dev (and
even the users themselves! :) ) community, then portions of everyone's
respective sandbox code could be integrated. I'd really like to see
Chainsaw develop into something totally powerful and flexible, but it'll
probably need to be done through small iterations, formed from a base plan.

If this sounds agreeable to the dev community, are there any guidelines to
follow for this sort of thing? I'm happy to help co-ordinate anything if
need be. Scott, interested in this too?

cheers,
