Mmm, that would be easier, but I never trust myself that way. I'll copy a
shell from another witness, and modify it to what I expect it to produce,
and then if the test case fails, either my code is wrong, or my
expectations/understandings.  The test case helps me to validate both! :)

I could do that.  The only specific thing I could add is where to get
JAXP/checkstyle/jalopy and how to configure the build.properties, and
learning how the test cases work.  I agree that could be useful.  I'll add
it to my todo list (might also be useful in the jakarta-log4j cvs module
itself.)
