Currently away from pc so cannot check if the switch already exists in
GelfAppender, but in Gelf's case there is only layout and one Appender so it
matters less where the switch is located.
On the other hand it may still make sense to do this consistently in the
Apoender instead of in the Layout since users writing custom Appenders are
likely to copy our code...
