Hello and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter, and happy Yorkshire Day. I hope
you’ve had a good week, and if you’re looking forward to doing something on the
weekend, I hope it goes very well. If you’re going anywhere interesting, and
you think it might make a nice photograph, take your camera along and send us
any unusual pictures to show on the programme. And if you’re doing anything to
celebrate Yorkshire Day, let me know about that too.
Let’s hope the weather’s nice as well, we’ll have the full detailed weather
forecast for the weekend on the programme tonight, and as always the day’s news
and stories from our part of the world. That’s all coming up on Friday’s Look
North at half past six on BBC One.

Scrabble

Well I mentioned in the letter recently that an internet word game very similar
to Scrabble had been taken down due to legal action from the makers of the
original board game. Well apparently the game is back up, with a change of
name, different shaped tiles, and slightly changed rules. Instead of the
familiar square tiles, they’re now round, and the programmers hope the changes
will be enough to avoid the heavy legal action they were threatened with.
Its funny how seemingly superficial changes can make such a difference, but
it’s all part of the murky world of copyright law. So with a slightly different
look, and a new name, you can now enjoy your online word related fun again.
Just don’t mention Scrabble!

Harry Potter

It seems the Harry Potter phenomenon just keeps rolling on. Even after the
official last Harry Potter book has been published, fans can now head back to
the bookshops for another fix.
I think I mentioned in the letter a while ago that the author of the incredible
successful series, J. K. Rowling, had produced seven hand made copies of a book
of fairy tales. They were related to the Harry Potter series, and given to
friends and auctioned for charity.
Now it’s been announced that The Tales of Beedle The Bard, which played a big
part in the final Harry Potter instalment, will now be mass published.
One of the original hand written and illustrated copies sold for an astonishing
£1.95 million in December last year. It’s incredible how popular the series has
become. I’m sure this latest publication is going to make fans very happy, and
with the vast amounts of money it generates, I’m sure J.K. won’t be too down in
the dumps either.

Eclipse

Large parts of the northern hemisphere are experiencing a solar eclipse today.
Russia is getting the longest period of total eclipse, with a duration of just
under two and a half minutes. In one Siberian town, over 5,000 tourists and
visitors were expected to watch the event, which travelled from Canada through
Russia to China.
Here in the UK we only experienced a partial eclipse, visible in London, where
the moon only blotted out a 12% chunk out of the sun. Further north on the
Shetland Isles, as much as 36% was blocked out. I think it’s one of those
things we all hope to see at some point, and it’s an event as exciting for it’s
rarity as for its spectacular appearance.
So if you’re managed to get a glimpse of the event somewhere, and you took any
pictures, send them in to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], and tell me how it was.

Well that’s about it from me for this week. I hope you’ll be able to join me
for Friday’s Look North tonight at half past six on BBC One. If you have
anything interesting that you think we should know about, or any unusual
pictures for us to show on the programme, get in touch and send them to me as
well.

Just before I finish, yesterday I mentioned a panel of top taste testers had
ranked the country’s tap water in order of taste, and that prompted Michael to
get in touch with me, he says:
“If you put a bottles of any area's tap water in the 'fridge for about half an
hour you will not be able to taste the difference.”

I’m not going to argue with you on that, but then as I said yesterday, I don’t
have the educated taste buds of a top chef, for whom it seems only the best tap
water will suffice. For the rest of us living here, we’ll just have to put up
with only the 8th best tap water in the country.

Have a very good weekend, and join me for Look North tonight at the usual time.

Bye for now

Peter
