Hello and welcome to today’s Levy Letter for Monday. If you had anything
planned for the weekend I hope it went very well indeed, and if you took any
unusual pictures then send them in to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] And if you heard
about any interesting stories you think we should know about, or if something
happened to you and you think it should be in the news, drop me a line and give
me the details.

Last Choir Standing

I’ve mentioned this event in the letter a few times, and there’s still time to
book your place. BBC One are currently searching for the nation’s favourite
choir and the people of Hull are being encouraged to join in! There’ll be a
giant sing along next month in the city centre. I’ll be there as the host.
It’s a free event with music and participation, with some top quality choral
performances too. I hope to see you there for that one. The event will involve
a mass singing workshop for the audience along with performances from local
choirs.
The singing workshop will take place at The Big Screen, Queen Victoria Square,
Hull on Saturday, August 9 at 3pm.
The whole event is expected to last about 90 minutes.
Five hundred tickets for seats at the event are available until midnight on
Sunday, July 27. To be in the seated audience, members of the public will need
to register for tickets either on the website bbc.co.uk/lastchoirstanding or by
telephone on 03700 100 150 (calls cost no more than calls to 01/02 geographic
numbers).
If you want to know any more about what is going to be a very enjoyable event,
then you can email [EMAIL PROTECTED] I hope you can come along.

Happy

I had a little piece in the letter last week about the fact that people are
happier at work when they’re over 50. It was revealed in some new research, and
Mike, who’s retired, got in touch to give me some of his thoughts. He says:

“I think the reason older workers are happier is that they have seen it all and
realize that all the promises of prospects are always in the future and largely
mythical. Consequently they know there is no point in striving for the
impossible and settle happily for what they've got.”

That’s very philosophical, isn’t it? Thank you Mike, and if you have any
comments or tidbits for the Levy Letter, let me know.

Procrastination

Now here’s a subject I’m sure a lot of us can identify with, it’s the problem
of time-wasting. According to new research, it’s not only an annoying
characteristic, but a chronic condition that can affect careers, relationships,
and even health. And many researchers are pointing the finger at technology for
providing too many distractions.
According to a study being published this year, as many as 15-20% of people are
chronic procrastinators, putting things off until the last minute, and finding
trivial excuses not to do something. Some of the serious consequences of
procrastinating can be depression, low self esteem, and health problems due to
putting off important appointments and examinations.
Sufferers are also more at danger of hurting themselves with broken appliances
in the home.
It’s certainly a much more serious spin on time wasting than people are
probably used to, isn’t it? The role of new technology is very interesting, as
the computer beep that signals a new email arrival is – incredibly – thought to
be responsible for a 0.5 drop in gross domestic product in the United States,
costing the economy $70bn a year. I don’t know how that works, maybe we get
distracted or annoyed by it.
Researchers also say that the common belief that we do things better when we’re
under pressure at the last minute is a myth. How many people are guilty of
saying that? It’s very interesting research, and if you’ve been putting
something important off, maybe now’s the time to do it. That is unless you’ve
just received a text message on your phone, or maybe you’re reading a very
interesting email letter…

Well enough procrastination for now, that’s about it from me for today. I hope
you enjoy what’s left of your afternoon, and don’t forget to get in touch with
me if you have anything to let us know about for the programme, or an unusual
picture for us to show before the weather. I look forward to seeing what you
send in.

Bye for now

Peter
