i should clarify. it was acting pokey for several days in the beginning of boot cycle. yesterday i tried to install os8.1 in an attempt to resolve a different issue, when it all went to hell in a handbasket. it did boot from the cd yesterday, and i spent some time trying to reinstall 8.0, etc.--the things i mentioned in the earlier msg. when i finally gave up at 3am, i turned it off., this am, nothing. it does partially boot, and i get happy face, welcome to mac, and even a partial desktop. (i just got a full desktop, but everything takes forever, and it would not load techtools.) by forever, i mean just to swap windows takes many minutes. the partial desktops, whether 755 or 80, then freeze. (7.5.5 items are scattered.) at various times i have gotten address problem msgs--disk repair gave me missing directory records in the catalog files, and catalog file entries not found for extent 3,13 and 3,14. at various reboots, it has crashed, giving me address error, and to reboot with sys extensions off. well, it is hit or miss or nothing to get it to boot from the cd drive AND turn off extensions.
i have my work life and family life on there. i have some backup, but like most people, not enough! this is serious! thanks again for your time. > Try > unplugging the HDD then booting. IT'S INTERNAL. IS THERE AN EASIER WAY? If it boots you have ahrdware problem > with your HDD, if it still doesn't work then either you have a problem > with both the HDD and CD or more likely the SCSI bis. Check your cable for frayed or broken wires and make sure the connection on the MB is good. > > > > > > -- > Bruce Johnson > University of Arizona > College of Pharmacy > Information Technology Group > > > -- > The LowEndMac list is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... > > 123Inkjets.com <http://lowendmac.com/ad/123inkjets.html> > > Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> > > LowEndMac list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/lowendmac.html> > Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/lowendmac%40mail.maclaunch.com/> > > Using a Macintosh?
