Right. Let's see. I shall be referring to http://www.lpi.org/eng/certification/the_lpic_program/lpic_2/exam_201_detailed_objectives which will probably go away soon, so get it while it is fresh. | - Old stuff, kernel 2.4, just ask for options and arguments.. Topic 201 explicitly mentions kernel 2.4 in various places. I think we can all agree that by now this is »old stuff«. | - Ask for entry positions in crontab, exportfs, smb.conf .. Objectives 2.213.1 and 2.214.8 mention »crontab« by name. »exportfs« is explicitly in 2.209.2. The meaning of entries in these configuration files is approximately one of three or so things one could sensibly ask about them in an exam, so it doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to figure out that, given that the files are part of the syllabus, that sort of thing would be worth knowing. How does this disclose »detailed exam content«? As far as smb.conf is concerned, that file is mentioned specifically in objective 2.209.1, which says »Candidates should be able to set up a Samba server ...«. I may be dense but in my opinion it should not come as a big surprise that in an exam that explicitly covers Samba, yes, you will be asked about things that go into smb.conf. | - Xserver Setup Objective 2.204.2 specifically mentions X.org and XFree86 in an »Adding new hardware« context. Feel free to tell me how this does not involve »Xserver setup«. | - Lilo and rdev stuff.. That would be objectives 2.201.2, 2.202.2, 2.214.2, and 2.214.4 (among others). »rdev« is mentioned by name in 2.214.2. | - Some shell, awk, perl scripting.. Objective 2.213.1 specifically mentions perl, bash, and awk, and says »Candidates should be able to write simple scripts«. Perl, bash, and awk are examples of what is commonly referred to as a »scripting language«, so if they are mentioned in the exam objectives in the context of »writing simple scripts« it stands to reason that, in fact, »some shell, awk, perl scripting« may be called for in the actual exam. | - Pcmcia and cardbus stuff – do we need this on a server or desktop? Objective 2.204.4 is called »Configuring PCMCIA devices« and specifically mentions PCCard (as in »credit-card-sized peripheral that communicates with the computer via cardbus«), and PCMCIA. | - 4 answers awking for „tune2fs“ Objectives 2.203.2 and 2.204.3 specifically mention »tune2fs«. OK, to sum up: There is nothing whatsoever in Mr Steudten's original message that is not either explicitly stated in the published objectives for LPI-201 or else wouldn't be obvious to a person with room-temperature IQ, certainly anyone who ever even considered sitting down to take an LPI exam. The gentle reader will hopefully agree with me that we can consider the ridiculous notion that Mr Steudten in his message divulged anything of a confidential nature concerning the LPI-201 exam utterly debunked. I quite agree that people should not be discussing »detailed« exam content in a public forum, but, to quote Inigo Montoya, You keep using this word ... I do not think it means what you think it means. (And, just for the record, I have never taken the LPI-201 exam myself, nor have I ever seen any of the questions beyond the samples posted on the LPI web site, so I couldn't be disclosing »detailed exam content« even if I wanted to.) > Never mind--there will be more stuff coming out next week. Whatever. I already took a much too large chunk out of my afternoon in order to rehabilitate Mr Steudten, so I'll just say that my notion of effective PR seems to be greatly different from LPI's, and leave it at that :^) Anselm (Again, any opinions in here are mine alone and not those of Linup Front GmbH.) -- Anselm Lingnau ...
