Gone. Some options are still needed to know, though, for 2.6
Ok, kernel 2.6 is "very" new - be prepared for 2.7 ;-)
Why do you ask for xx in "make xx" for building a new kernel? It's up to you,
using
Make xconfig
Make menuconfig
Make gconfig
Make oldconfig
A serious linux man runs "make help" and this shows alle the possibles make
optionss..
You could also vi .config by hand, if you like -so why to learn about all
possibilities?

> - Ask for entry positions in crontab, exportfs, smb.conf ..

You better still know this stuff ;)
No, don't like to know all the hundred options and position in smb.conf. I know
I can run
"man samba" or "man smb.conf" or whatever = apropos samba apropos smb and got
all the current and valid
Options for smb.conf.
I agree you should know the difference between "/var/spool/cron" crontab and
/etc crontab.

> - Xserver Setup

Mostly gone.

Most import today - for the most users using the GUI with which window manager
whatever.
I remember the times, building the mode lines by hand - is this requested
today? The answer is "No".

> - Lilo and rdev stuff..

You still need to know lilo for LPIC-2 (not LPIC-1, though). I just did a
Debian install (couldn't get Xen hosting working on Ubuntu 8.04) and it
wanted to do a lilo install. As for rdev, it is still a useful command but
not considered important enough to test any longer.

Oh, grub is too new, to ask for?
Asking for install grub in the MBR or GPT or in the boot sector of the partion
is to simple?

> - Some shell, awk, perl scripting..

Perl is gone. May still be some awk in questions (but not the focus). You
better still know your BASH scripting, though. Personally, I'm kinda sad to
see awk go.
Scriting is fine. However using bash for years - and other shells - but yes I
don't know which file of
/etc/bashrc, /etc/bashrc.d/* ~/.bashrdc ~/.bash_login ~/.bash_profile
~/.profile is run first and which after the others.
Do you mean this with "scripting"?

> - Pcmcia and cardbus stuff - do we need this on a server or desktop?

Mostly gone. As is most hardware (non-Linux, general purpose stuff) topics.

> - 4 answers awking for "tune2fs"

Isn't tune2fs a great command :)
Seems to be your favourite. Sorry, I only use "tune2fs -l .." which gives me
all what I want - I don't see a need to ask for different args..
I just wondering the answer was "tune2fs" again, and again..
And linux has the freedom to use whatever FS you like. So not only "mke2fs" is
THE ANSWER, it is one possible answer, if you like to use E2FS. But that you
should imagine in the question last Friday.

This is not the world. Asking for arguments, options or whatever you need to
run LPIC..

The better way is to learn how you can find a solution, how you find an answer
for your problem.
You can use perl, bash, awk, sed, tr, sed, whatever to solve your problem under
un*x or linux or OS X.

Thomas
