Hi Ottavio,

Correct, https://people.lpi.org is new.

I just found your email in my spam folder. Hence, the late reply. I think
google doesn't like yahoo addresses much.

On a second thought, I've noticed that membership price just to extend

I think the operative word in your above premise is "just". If you just
want to extend the active date of your certification/minimise costs,
there's little need to join as a member. Nothing is changing in the
existing certification programs including when certifications go 'inactive'
after five years. They are still publicly displayable and a testament to
your skills. Plus, five years should be plenty of time to leverage the
value of the certification.

And, if you ever need to dust off the credential, you could join for one
year. That'll reactivate the cert for whatever needed purpose. That's
about 35% of the cost of taking one exam and less than 20% of the cost of
retaking LPIC-1. As well, if you had an LPIC-2 go inactive and you wanted
to get LPIC-3, reactivating the LPIC-2 and carrying on is much less
expensive than retaking LPIC-1 and LPIC-2. Even the 3 year membership is
90% of the cost of an exam and 45% of the cost of retaking LPIC-1.

I guess i'm questioning your arithmetic. :)

For the rest of this email, the TL;DR is: If you are getting everything you
need/want from the "pre-Member" LPI already, that part isn't changing and
membership may not be for you.

Regardless, viewing this as just a way to extend a
certification's expiration or another social networking vehicle is missing
the point of the membership program which will become more apparent over
time.

When LPI was started up, the intention was always to hand over the reins of
the organization to the certification holders. That's what is happening.
The members of LPI are now the ones that will be voting for the board (or
running for a board position). You don't have to be a member to run for a
board position, too. This is an annual occurrence along with an AGM of all
members. There's also a Member Engagement committee forming,
https://www.lpi.org/committees/member-engagement, that'll be able to affect
things regularly.

As well, the board wanted there to be a focus to the membership other than
simply governance. And the thought was to transition from helping people
get their first or next job to helping more broadly in their careers and
communities. Which will explain the various initiatives that'll be popping
up or already have if you poke around the web site.

And, our intention is to make the value to the member of joining exceed the
costs, irrespective of the extensions to the certifications inactive
dates. This is my favourite one perq so far:
https://fluent-forever.app/promo?coupon=LPI20, with an extended discount if
it's popular (they said I could share it with non-members but don't tweet
it). Besides, that certification extension is a benefit of participating
in the PDU (continuous education and experience) part of the membership
program and not the cash outlay.

The idea of a membership option without the PDUs was considered but then
we'd have to kick people out when their certs go inactive. Plus, we'd have
to differentiate between the folk that have a certification and _may_ have
exceeded those expectations from people that wish to demonstrate their
growth beyond the certifications. Or drop the PDU part but there's a lot
of value to the demonstrable cert+experience+continuing education combo.

Ultimately though, it'll be up to the members to (help) shape LPI going
forward. If you think there's something LPI, as an organization, should be
doing that it isn't (or should stop), you'll have to get involved. Or, at
least, come to the AGM and shoot your mouth off for a while. Hmm, maybe
that should be listed as a member benefit, too. :)

Take care,
