There are absolutely threads in e-mail. That's what the “In-Reply-To” header is for, and it has been around at least since RFC 822 (from 1982). Having said that, I agree that top-posting sucks, especially if it is combined with quoting a very long tail of previous messages (or as the case may be entire digests of unrelated messages). If anything it is a mark of laziness on the part of e-mail users as well as a mark of incompetence on the part of the implementers of MUAs.
