I can confirm this, it's often used for long-term, rarely used data storage.The Italian Post Service relies on LTOs for this reason, and I have seen them used also in mid-sized enterprise data centers to preserve data that is unnecessary for the daily customer services, but is required by data retention law that is preserved for a period ranging from six months to two years, maybe more according to the specific data.
