I think this would help a little.

Obj 2.compiling kernel
        make mrproper   <--2.2.1 Recompile the kernel
        make oldconfig
        mkinitrd        <-- 2.2.11 Create an initrd
        mkbootdisk      <-- should be included to create a new boot disk???

Obj 4: Customizine kernel
        /etc/conf.modules       <--changed to /etc/modules.conf in R.H 7.0???
