Ahh, but that is because it is documented that way. The enormously large
man page for bash talks about /etc/profile, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login,
~/.profile, ~/.bashrc, and ~/.bash_logout.
It even specifies that bash running as a login shell checks for
~/.bash_profile, ~/.bash_login, and ~/.profile in that order ...
