Hi guys,

Let me offer a quick introduction. I'm the recently christened person
responsible for exam development at LPI. I've worked with various people at
LPI since its inception, including the exam development team and volunteers.

I really like the excitement here. It really shows how much pent up
interest there is in doing LPIC-3.

Let me clear a few things up before I jump into the fray on other threads,
too.

The First Exams

The first two exams have the general topics of 'LDAP' and 'Samba'. This came
out of some direct market research and interviews with some of LPI's biggest
clients (read: companies with a large number of LPI certified professionals).

This is not going to be the extent of the exams for 'LPIC-3'. Just the
beginning. What is expected from these two exams is the ability for
successful exam takers to demonstrate a thorough knowledge in these areas.

This also (to me) includes related technologies.

What is Important/Covered?

Should there be some LDAP in Samba? Or some Samba in LDAP? Or some PAM in
LDAP or Samba or???

The answer is a definite maybe :)

Seriously, though. We are still at the dart board stage in the development
of these exams. The darts being a list of tasks that an IT professional
would have to perform around these technologies.

This means that nothing is ruled out. Where things get ruled out or, more
precisely, honed and weighted is during the JTA (Job Task Analysis) phase.
The JTA is where everyone on the planet (with a browser) can vote on how
important, how frequent and at what level each tasks is to them.

If most people think that LDAP related Samba tasks aren't terribly useful,
they'll get a low vote and correspond to little or no coverage in the final
exams.

Where is LPIC-3 Going?

This will undoubtedly lead to some more heated conversations. And I'd like
to hear everyone's opinion on it. My personal opinion (at least for today)
is that we should continue with the original 'pass any two level 3 exams and
you get an LPIC-3 certification' idea that was proposed by the creators of
the LPIC-1/LPIC-2 programs.

_However_, I also like the idea of creating 'bundles' of level 3 exams that
would qualify you for 'advanced' certifications like a Security Specialist or
Infrastructure Something or LPICA (LPI Certified Architect ;).

I also like the idea of an OSS Developer track that parallels the LPIC track.
I've sort of been thinking of something like:

        LPID-1 (LAMP developer)
        LPID-2 (OSS developer)

Anyway, feel free to comment on things about the future of LPIC-3, LPID (LPI
Developer), hands on testing. I'll try to participate as much as possible in
those discussions. However, my main focus this year is on getting those
first two exams complete and out the door.

More in other threads.

Regards,
