OK, I need to debunk this fallacy about the Red Hat exams.
The Red Hat marketing department likes to assert that their exam
tests "real working knowledge or real working systems". That doesn't
mean they do, and IMNSHO they do not. The RH exam is as far removed
from real life as the LPI exam is. A true real life exam would take
about two weeks and would involve me throwing the candidate into a data
centre with real machines, which is what we do in real life.
True: No 1-day exam can truly test your complete depth of Linux
knowledge. However, true believer in "hands on" exams would disagree
with your statement that "The RH exam is as far removed from real life
as the LPI exam is" for one simple reason: It is possible to pass the
LPIC exams with little or no hands on experience at all (using exam prep
guides - I know of at least one person who has done this personally);
It isn't possible to pass a "hand on" exam without any real world (or a
lot of practice) experience.
So, I agree that the RH exam doesn't completely test real world
experience, but I do feel that it comes closer than a "computer-based"
exam does. Of course I could always be wrong in this perception...:+}
