Remember the core objectives of L-1, L-2, and L-3.
I feel that SQL is a level 3 (or 2.5) issue. It is not a core of Linux.
It's just another App like Apache and Samba
L-1 should stay Linux/GNU and not stray in other directions.
Maybe I'm just old fashion (or just old!).
I teach this material all over USA. The basics, sells classes and
attracts new (Microsoft) users to move to Linux.

The testing should say 'This person is qualified to administer
systems.' To me that includes understanding SQL as while the
applications mentioned are not to be tested, the underlying commands
necessary to install the applications requires issuing SQL statements.
Of course the administrator can just parrot the commands, but I would
rather they know what they are doing just in case there are issues. As
for what to test, use the SQL99 Standard and only on CREATE, SELECT,
ALTER, DROP, and DELETE commands.
what about GRANT and friends? I know I mentioned this on the latest TAC
meeting and that I got shot for it at that time, but maybe people on
this list are more sensitive. ;-)
I find that mostly, an application relying on some DB can manage it's
CREATE, SELECT, ... needs perfectly by itself, *after* it has been given
the *rights* to do so.
you create a new DB on your server, you create a new owning user for it
and off you go. this certainly involves GRANT and friends, doesn't it?
we will let somebody mv, cp or rm if he doesn't understand chown and
chmod. so will we let somebody SELECT an DELETE when he doesn't
understand GRANT or REVOKE?
Definitely limit it to the biggees that will be used. I can not tell
you how many times as an administrator I am asked to tie in
administrative tools into a database so someone can write a pretty
report for someone else or an application install requires me to issue
these commands. As an example, the local highschool system
administrator is now in need of learning SQL.
by the way, I'm voting ``yes'' for inclusion of some SQL in LPIC-1. :-)

I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept.
