Maybe "syslogng" is a good topic, as this allows more flexibility like regex 
filtering.
However /var/log/ is default, but you can change it in the syslog.conf config 
file. So you need first the setting from the system log daemon  to know where 
to look for.

Correct.  None of that has to be covered.  /var/log/... is mentioned as one
of the resources people use for trouble shooting.

Thus, you should consider those files as potential sources of information and
not on how the information is generated.
