My understanding is that XMPP was derived from Jabber. XMPP is pretty
much the defacto standard of IM today. Unquestionably there is a
significant population that hve not upgraded to more recent or modern
clients. We use a CommuniGate Pro server which supports XMPP and XMISS.
Google and pretty much every major IM service is now supporting XMPP.

I believe Novell and many other large development organizations still
have internal IRC servers. We dropped ours over a decade ago. Very few
ISPs even run IRC servers any more. Frankly they are more used by the
inner circle of hackers (meant is a positive way), bad people playing
with botnets, and a hand full of criminal elements. it has been so long
since i used them I can't even remeber my IRC credentials and servers I
used to frequent. A few years ago when we were working directly with
Novell consulting and sat behind the Walthhem firewall we used the
Novell IRC servers quite regularly.
