This is the ticket. Sweet! I thought "direct" in terms of
LRPng/printtool meant to a directly attached device (i.e. parallel,
serial, usb, etc.) only so I never bothered to look at it.

Well the kit at hp.sourceforge.net is sweet, for sure. I tried it at
home (Mandrake 7.2, well, Cooker actually) with my HP DeskJet 930C and
didn't have so much luck. I guess it was really due to a lack of PPD
support for GhostScript -- I have to have things like N-up printing.
