Well, one thing to wonder about is the network itself.  In a couple of
cases (in a somewhat different environment) we have seen printers that
suddenly gave very poor performance - sometimes long waits as you've
seen, but also stopping in the middle of medium-to-large jobs.  Eventually
someone tried pinging the printer, and we were seeing 40-50% packet
loss!  In one case it was a hub, in another I think either cable or the
network card in the printer.

Probably that's not your problem, but it's something else to check.
